A huddle of football players in white helmets and grey jerseys gathers on a field, with spectators in the stands and a vibrant red and orange sunset sky in the background.

Helix Charter High School, located in La Mesa, California, has been proudly serving students and families since 1951. Originally founded as a traditional public high school, Helix made history in 1998 by becoming one of the first comprehensive public high schools in California to convert to charter status.

While our educational programs have evolved to meet the diverse needs of today’s students, our traditions, spirit, and commitment to excellence remain at the heart of who we are.

Helix is known for its strong academic programs, vibrant arts and athletics, and wide variety of student activities. As both a neighborhood school and a charter school, we continue to serve our local community while welcoming students from across the region who are drawn to the Helix experience.

❓FAQS:

What are the Highland Games? Traditional Scottish festivals celebrating Celtic heritage through heavy athletic competitions, music, and community gathering.

Do I have to compete in the games? Nope! Our students, staff, and select community groups will be doing the heavy lifting. All other attendees are warmly invited to cheer them on as spectators.

Will the games be traditional? The games will be slightly modified to ensure a safe environment for participants and spectators.

Do I need to have a current Helix student to attend? No, this event is open to everyone—alumni, prospective families, neighbors, and supporters of all ages. Come one, come all to help us form a proper Highland Village!

Is seating provided? No, seating won't be set up on the lower fields, so please bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, or pop-up canopies to stay comfortable! We'll have a drop-off area right near the fields so you can unload your gear without hauling it all the way down from the parking lot.

Can I bring my own food? Yes, you are welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. We will also have food trucks on site if you'd like to purchase food.

Can children come? Yes, we will have a bounce house and other activities for children.

How can I connect with alumni from my class year? Let us know on your RSVP form if you’re a Helix alum and if so, what decade. We will share your email with your decade’s point person so they can reach out with detail. Or simply stop by your decade’s canopy on game day!

Can my business or community group host a booth? Yes! Please submit your details through the RSVP form, and a member of our planning team will follow up with you.

Come help us form a proper Highland Village! See you on the field!
