C. Logging in and Finding Books on the Online Catalog

1. You will create your own password for Helix computers.

Notice the Call Numbers for the first two books in the list.

Example: Call number: 456.7 Jones

A call number is how you find the books on the shelves. Every book has an "address" or location in our Library.

Fiction book call number: FIC Jones

Nonfiction book call number: 641.14 Smith (Notice that Nonfiction books have NUMBERS!)

D. Using ePack

ePack allows you to access documents on your Helix desktop from computers off-campus. If you have saved a paper to your documents at school, you can access the paper in ePack, download it to your home computer, work on it at home, and then upload it back into ePack so that you can retrieve it at school.

E. Using Computers for Online Research:

1 . Return to the “Library Home Page” and select "Subscription Services." These services are collections of articles and reports that you can use for research. To access them from home, you will need passwords (available in the library).

2. Go back to the Library Home Page and choose "Class Research." These pages are lists of web sites that you can use for help with school assignments. Choose "English" and then "Poetry and Song Lyrics." What is one of the web sites in this category?

3. Next, select "Geography" from the Class Research page. What is one site you could use to find country information?

4. From the Library Home Page, choose "Popular Search Engines." What is the name of one search engine (other than Google) listed here?

E. Internet Rules at Helix:

Click here for the Helix Internet Rules.

F. Fiction, Nonfiction, & Reference Books

1. Nonfiction books are organized by the Dewey Call Number.
2. Fiction books are organized by the author’s last name with FIC and the last name.
3. Reference books are organized like non-fiction, but they have
yellow labels on their spines and are located in the Reference Section of the Library.

What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction books?

Fiction books are stories (not true).

Nonfiction books are facts and information.

G. Finding Books to Read

The Book Lists binder at the circulation desk can help you with suggestions of books you might enjoy.

On the Library Home Page, you can find more book recommendations by clicking on "Need a Good Book?"

Another good way to find books is to ask one of the library staff! (We're always happy to talk books with you!)

H. The Library Security System

If books leave the Helix Library without being checked out, the library security system will go off.

Any student leaving the Library with materials that have not been checked out (or who causes another student to set off the security alarm) will receive a referral and lose Library privileges for four weeks.

I. Copying and Printing:

1. Printing from computers in the Library costs TEN CENTS per page.

2. I must choose the correct PRINTER/ROOM before printing.

3. I can make photocopies in the Library for TEN CENTS per page.

J. Book Drop:

Returning Books to the Library

Near the front door of the Library is the Book Drop where you can return Library Books.

K. Time Stamp Machine for PASSES
The Library Time Stamp Machine is located near the front door of the Library.

You use the time stamp machine every time you come to the Library on a PASS.

Stamp the pass when you arrive and when you leave, so that your teacher knows the time you arrived in the Library and when you left.

*You MUST have a pass to use the Library during class time.
