- your password = helix (must be lowercase).
- You'll then be prompted to create your own password. This will be your password for the school year.
2. Make sure your default printer is set to Room 300 (the library).- Whenever you print to a different room on campus, you'll need to change your printer settings.
- Go to "Settings" then "Printers and Faxes" then "Add a Printer."
- Don’t forget...you are responsible to pay for any pages you print.
3. Using the Library Catalog.- Go to the Helix Home Page. Click on “Library” (upper right tab).
- Go to the Helix Online Library Catalog.
- Choose a country. Search for a book on that country by typing the country name into the search bar.
- Look under the words "Search Results" on the screen. It will tell you the number of records (or books).
Notice the Call Numbers for the first two books in the list.
Example: Call number: 456.7 Jones
A call number is how you find the books on the shelves. Every book has an "address" or location in our Library.Fiction book call number: FIC Jones
Nonfiction book call number: 641.14 Smith (Notice that Nonfiction books have NUMBERS!)
D. Using ePack
ePack allows you to access documents on your Helix desktop from computers off-campus. If you have saved a paper to your documents at school, you can access the paper in ePack, download it to your home computer, work on it at home, and then upload it back into ePack so that you can retrieve it at school.
- To log in to ePack, use the same login as you would for Helix computers (ID # and your personal password).
- After working on a document on your home computer, you must UPLOAD the document to ePack in order to save the changes. If you don't UPLOAD the document, your changes will be lost.
E. Using Computers for Online Research:
1 . Return to the “Library Home Page” and select "Subscription Services." These services are collections of articles and reports that you can use for research. To access them from home, you will need passwords (available in the library).
2. Go back to the Library Home Page and choose "Class Research." These pages are lists of web sites that you can use for help with school assignments. Choose "English" and then "Poetry and Song Lyrics." What is one of the web sites in this category?
3. Next, select "Geography" from the Class Research page. What is one site you could use to find country information?
4. From the Library Home Page, choose "Popular Search Engines." What is the name of one search engine (other than Google) listed here?
