Don't be like Sally and Juan!!
| Sally and Juan were quite an item at Helix High School. When you saw one on campus, you saw the other. They were always together! | ![]() |

One day Sally and Juan came to the Helix Library where Sally realized she needed a book on oceanography for a research paper due the next day. When she and Juan came to the checkout counter to checkout the book, she realized that she did not have her ID card. |
Of course, everyone knows you need an ID card to checkout Library materials. Sally turned to Juan, and with all the charm she could exude, she said, "Juaaaaan, will you check out this book for me, pleeeeeease?" What could Juan do? He was smitten. "Of course," he said, although the Librarian quickly reminded Juan that checking out books for other people is not a good idea. "Oh, no problem," said Juan, "this is myyyy Sally." Everyone knows that checking out books in your name means YOU are the one responsible for the books! But Juan didn't care. |

Off they walked, the book in Sally's arm, and Sally in Juan's arm. |
Weeks later the book was overdue. Library notices were sent to Juan. By that time, Juan did not remember he had checked out a book for Sally. In fact he wasn't even speaking to Sally. She had dumped him for someone else. Actually, by the time the Library book was six weeks overdue, Sally had gone through several boy friends! |

The Library notices kept plaguing Juan. But, Juan, not remembering that he really had checked out the book, just threw the notices in the trash. (NEVER toss out a Library notice! Deal with it right away!) |
One day, about three months after Juan had checked out the book for Sally, Juan was in the Library. The Librarian saw him and remembered he was on the Fine List. "Hey, Juan, why don't you clear up that fine you have with the Library?" she asked. Juan annoyingly replied, "I've been meaning to ask you about that. I never checked out any science book, Mrs. S. I don't even take a science class. I'm sure you made a mistake." "No, don't you remember? I was here after school on the day you checked out that book for Sally." |

"Sally? Don't ever mention her name around me. She dumped me and is on her sixth guy by now. I'll never speak to her again!" "Well, you're going to have to speak to her one more time, if you don't want to pay for the book. Give her a call tonight and ask her to return the book." |
Juan mustered up his courage to call Sally that night and ask about the Library book. Mrs. S had even given him the title of the book, so she would know what to look for. "Ohhhhh, hi, Juan," was Sally's cool greeting. "No, sorry I don't know anything about any oceanography book from the Library. Sorry. Gotta go." And plunk, she hung up the phone. |

The next day Juan sadly returned to the Library to pay for the lost book, the service fee, AND the fine for the days it was overdue. He not only lost the girl, but also lost a bunch of money. A sad lesson. |
Moral
of this story: NEVER checkout material for other people–even
your best friend! |
