June 1, 2020

Dear Helix Families,

I write this letter with a sense of astonishment that it has been over 81 calendar days since we have had the joy of students, staff and families on our campus.

As we approach the end of the 2019-20 school year, despite the continued progress against the COVID-19 virus in our county, we are disappointed that we will not be able to physically reopen this school year.

As Governor Newsom has shared, California is making progress but is currently in Stage 2 of its reopening plans, which allows for certain businesses, parks and other public areas to partially reopen. Schools across the state are not included in this phase of his reopening plan. This means that restrictions from our local public health officials are still in place for schools.

In light of this difficult news, I send a BIG thank you to all of you for continuing to support your students in their active engagement in learning through the end of the school year.

Your Grade Level Teams have shared information with you regarding the retrieval of items left at school, and the return of textbooks, athletic and performance uniforms, summer enrollment and registration, etc., along with information specific to our resilient and AMAZING Class of 2020. We are looking forward to celebrating our Senior Class on June 4th. Please plan on viewing the graduation procession being streamed live at 12:00pm and the graduation ceremony at 6:00pm. Details regarding viewing access for these events will be shared later this week.

Our 2020-21 school year is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 5, 2020. We are currently investigating and developing multiple scenarios for how to reopen our school in a safe manner and in compliance with all currently known public health and safety requirements.

Using feedback from the Distance Learning survey completed by parents, students, and staff, we are considering opening school in a Distance Learning model with more structure and required synchronous class time and support. All teachers will participate in two trainings provided by the San Diego County Office of Education and Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District this summer and fall. These training and online teaching certification programs will focus on increasing our teachers’ capacity to effectively deliver curriculum and instruction in an online environment. As a result of the training, we will likely return to letter grades in this new Distance Learning model.

We are also developing hybrid Distance Learning/On Campus models to safely serve a fewer number of students on campus. On the slight chance that public health restrictions ease and our capacity to appropriately address health and safety concerns increases, we are preparing for the possibility of opening school with classes on campus.

Although no specific guidance has yet been provided from local and state officials, we are in constant communication with our County Public Health Department and the San Diego County Office of Education on these matters. Based on guidance we receive during the summer, we will determine which educational model best ensures the health and safety of our students and staff.

In closing, thank you for your dedication to your student’s learning and our collective health and wellness during these most unprecedented times. I will be communicating with you further over the summer regarding school reopening plans.

On behalf of our entire Helix staff, we look forward to the day when our school is filled once again with students and the joyful sounds and rhythm of learning.

Once a Scottie, Always a Scottie!

SET UP YOUR PARENT OBSERVER ACCOUNT

posted Aug 16, 2018, 1:50 PM by Brian Kick   [ updated Aug 15, 2019, 3:12 PM ]

 -
A Parent Observer Account allows you check-in on your student's assignments and grades in Canvas, the online learning management system (LMS) that we use at Helix.

To do this, your student will need to take steps to generate a "pairing" code that you must have to set up the account.

Here is a brief VIDEO created by Mr. Stack that should help you get set up.

And here is the Canvas Parent App set-up instructions for Apple iOS and Android.

Should you have any issues, please email him at stack@helixcharter.net
