Dear Helix Charter School Community:

Many questions are circulating after remarks by Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond about if and when California campuses will reopen this school year.

Helix Charter High School and the San Diego County Office of Education continue to carefully monitor guidance from federal, state, and local public health and education agencies. All decisions about reopening will be made in conjunction with local public health officials. We continue to hold out hope that campuses will reopen later this spring, but are making plans to continue teaching and learning if that is not the case. At this point, Helix campus to students and the public will be closed until further notice.

I want to be very clear that the 2019-20 school year is not over. As you know, Helix has transitioned from on-campus classroom instruction to distance learning. As Superintendent Thurmond stated, "schools are closed but classes are in." With our local health authorities, we will continue to monitor the situation as we transition to this new way of teaching and learning. Although it appears Helix will likely be closed through June 4th, we will continue to reserve the right to reopen if health conditions allow.

As we continue our efforts to transition to Distance Learning, it is important that students check their student email and class CANVAS pages daily. Students should be completing the enrichment activities to be better prepared for the transition to required distance learning for course credit.

We are asking all families to take this short Home Internet Access Survey. It will only take 3 minutes and help us assist those families who need assistance with internet access at home. If you know you need support with accessing digital curriculum at home, please contact your Grade Level Teams at:

9th Grade Students

Again, it is imperative that students engage in the enrichment activities provided the week of Monday, April 6th so that we know they are capable of accessing the digital curriculum.

Starting Monday, April 13th through June 4th (or until Helix reopens) students must engage the required curriculum in order to earn credit in their courses. Next week, be on the lookout for more specific information about our updated Distance Learning Plan.

Chromebook Service: If your student is having a Chromebook issue, the Helix IT Service Window will be available by appointment only from 8:00AM-11:00AM and 1:00PM-3:00PM Monday through Friday. Only students with appointments will be served. To schedule yours, go to calendly.com/helixitappt

We know that many students (especially our Seniors, who we know were looking forward to celebrating promotion and graduation ceremonies) are very concerned about missing out on end-of-year activities and

Celebrations. Please know that we are planning how we might offer these experiences in different formats and/or at a later date.

In the coming days and weeks, you will be hearing information regarding how grades, graduation, transcripts, scholarships, and summer school will be handled. While we recognize this situation poses challenges and hardships to many families, the most effective way to slow and disrupt the transmission of this pandemic - and therefore get back to normal - is by continuing to implement social distancing practices.

We are grateful to our community for everything you are doing during this unique and difficult time. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time. In the meantime, please trust that we are doing everything in our power to prioritize student safety, keep our community updated, and work toward the goal of getting our teachers and learners back together as soon as we can.

Sincerely,

Kevin Osborn

Estimado Padre/Tutor:

Atentamente,

Kevin Osborn

SET UP YOUR PARENT OBSERVER ACCOUNT

A Parent Observer Account allows you check-in on your student's assignments and grades in Canvas, the online learning management system (LMS) that we use at Helix.

To do this, your student will need to take steps to generate a "pairing" code that you must have to set up the account.

Here is a brief VIDEO created by Mr. Stack that should help you get set up.

And here is the Canvas Parent App set-up instructions for Apple iOS and Android.

Should you have any issues, please email him at stack@helixcharter.net
