Leadership, Systems & Organization

Here at Helix, both teachers and staff are asked to serve on numerous leadership commitees. It is these commitees that keep Helix organized and running.

Admin Team

o The Helix Charter High School Administrative Team’s primary goal is to lead and support staff, students and parents towards the full implementation of the school mission and vision. Through the grade level teaming process administrators are better able to maintain a focus on school improvement. Grade Level Teams, lead by the Assistant Principal for that grade level, establish Smart Goals that are reflective and supportive of the Course Level Teams. The Administrative Team continually reflects on and makes modifications to their goals.

Budget Commitee

o The Helix High School Budget Committee is a standing committee composed of representatives from Department Chair Council, teachers (at-large), classified, restructuring and administration. This committee meets regularly to review the revenues and expenditures (budget) of the school. Although this committee is very knowledgeable about the fiscal condition of Helix, it is a committee that makes recommendations to the Helix Charter Governing Board.

Charter Board

o The Helix Charter Board is the governing board for the school and is responsible for making policy decisions for the Helix campus. The Board has two parent representatives; one appointed by PTSA and one elected by all parents. There is also a community representative appointed by the Board, which may or may not be a parent. For more information, please contact Sharon Church in the principal's office (619) 644-1940 ext. 112.

Department Chair

o The Department Chair Council is the schoolwide decision-making body which is charged with the implementation of schoolwide policies. The council is also instrumental in the development and modification of policy proposals. Further, they are charged with the roll of maintaining and improving academic standards. What we expect our students to know and be able to do is continually analyzed and modified through their leadership.

Restructuring

o A Restructuring Committee made up of staff, parents and students will meet as necessary to consider and develop restructuring alternatives and make recommendations to the Helix Charter Governing Board. This committee selects its own Chairperson for a one-year term.

Typically, the Restructuring Committee meets once a month on the second Tuesday. Teachers in attendance are representatives from the department chosen from the Course Level Team Leaders of that department.

Parents and students are also invited to be a part of this committee. New ideas for Helix are discussed with this group, often forming Focus Groups to do indepth research on a topic before deciding to bring the concept to the School Board, if it passes the Restructuring Committee.
