What are some of the reasons to implement GLTs? What would offer the greatest potential to significantly change the way our large school works? |

| The question of how to break a large school into smaller schools within a school has not been well answered. Although many schools are working on this, little data exists to show how to best accomplish it. In a school of over 2400 students, grade level teams are an attempt to make a big school small. As a school and as small committees, we have looked at the idea of smaller learning communities and the success smaller schools are having on the educational levels of its students. Grant applications have been submitted to try to implement smaller learning communities, discussions have taken place and schools have been visited. What we have found is that many successful Smaller Learning Communities do not take place in full comprehensive high schools. They are either specialty high schools or start up schools. Grade Level teams are an attempt to move in the direction of smaller learning communities without altering already successful academic and co-curricular programs. |
